GRAIN AND PRODUCE

Canterbury Markets Dull By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, July 30. Canterbury grain and produce markets remain exceptionally quiet even for this time of year. Indeed, taking it all round, 1937 has been one of the dullest seasons in the history of the trade in recent years. Unfavourable weather in the autumn has had a lot to do with this. The potato position continues to be unsatisfactory. Northern requirements have been filled for the time being, and the apparent petering out of the South American demand has had a depressing effect. Prices are about the same as earlier in the week. Australian importations have left the chaff market largely lifeless. There is the usual seasonal quietness in the oafs market. There is a good demand for fowl wheat but very little is offering. Small seeds are still very quiet, but it is expected, that the spring demand will set in immediately after Grand National week. Indications are that there will be.' a fair sowing of grass in Canterbury in the spring, and if the North Island gets a decent dry spell there is bound to be a rush to sow. Big areas are being reported to be ready for seeding once the weather allows farmers to start. Stocks of all

classes of small seeds, particularly perennial rye grass, are reported to be very light throughout the Dominion because of the very poor crops harvested last autumn. There is at present no overseas demand for small seeds, the prospects of good crojts in Great Britain having doubtless influenced the situation.
