STEP FOLLOWS BOMBARDMENT OF CITY
Negotiations for Peace Reported to be in Progress By Telegraph.—Press, Assu—Copyright. (Received July 30, 1 a.m.) ? London, July 29. Messages from Peking declare that the Chinese abandoned Peking after the Japanese bombardment. They retired to Paotingfu, 90 miles to the- south, leaving General Chang Tze-chung commanding the Thirty-Eighth Division, who is favourable to the Japanese, in control of the city, which is quiet. Japanese planes dropped pamphlets urging the citizens to return to business. Japanese and Chinese in Peking are now reported to be negotiating for peace, General Sung Cheh-yuan delegating his powers in this connection to General Chang Tze-chung. The Chinese Government held an emergency meeting after the abandonment of Peking, and decided on new measures, the details of which have not been disclosed.
