MEN’S HOCKEY

Review of Club Games

WELLINGTON’S CHANCES ' IN SHIELD MATCH Canterbury Troubles

(By

Penalty.)

The Wellington hockey championship table was not altered materially by the results of last Saturday's play, except that University are now above Wesley after defeat of that team by a good margin. Karori B may consider themselves lucky not to have drawn with Hutt, who put up a good showing, and once again Karori have their defence to thank for a win. The "eternal triangle" of Karori B’s defence, Perrin. Spiers and Moore, will represent Wellington against Auckland iu the shield match to-morrow, and there is no reason to anticipate that the selectors will regret their choice. They are a sound combination and should give a good account of themselves. The HuttKarori B game, was a battle of tactics between two old hands, Perrin and McLeod . A.s expected. Karori A received a bad fright from Wesley. Wesley were wise not to have been awed by their opponents’ defeat of Huia iu their previous game. McDonald, who scored Karori A’s only goal, has proved worth his weight in gold to the Karori team. University turned ou unexpected dash to defeat "Wellington by five goals to two, but their win was well deserved, as their defence, with Benjamin playing a good game in goal, was better than it has been. Wellington have still a tendency to hit too hard in the circle, but by this time in the season they should have made better progress in overcoming this fault, which must have cost them many goals. Huia seem to have settled down again, in spite of their losing three men, and their display in the second spell against Technical was impressive despite the slow ground. Championship Table. The positions on the club championship table are as follows:—

To-morrow there will be no senior games in. Wellington because of the representative match against Auckland. The Wellington Team. The team that will play Auckland tomorrow* should stand a good chance of success, as the forwards are strong, the halves willing, anil the defence thoroughly understand each other. It is pleasing (to see that Kelly has been included, though he was the only man for the job, in spite of his lack of experience in representative hockey. Tf Chapman plays up to form he should be as useful to Wellington as he was dangerous to them about this time last year, when he played against them for Auckland. -Wheatley seems to have started a goal-getting era once again after a rather disappointing start in the earlier pai’t of the season, and Edwards can be relied upon. Dentice should find the trip valuable experience, and. given the opportunities, there is no reason why he should not do well. His dashing tactics will be appreciated by Aucklanders, a.s his style of getting in close to shoot goals is similar to that of the Auckland man, Roughton. who is playing centre-forward for the New Zealand team. The ground there should provide a treat to Wellington, even if

they are beaten, and their short passing game should work to good advantage on the smooth turf.

Canterbury Troubles. The Canterbury Hockey Association seems to have been having a little trouble with a junior A grade team, according to >1 repqrt. that appeared iu a southern paper yesterday. The incidents reported below are not a good advertisement for hockey. Tlie umpire is to be congratulated ou his handling of the matter, amt tlie publicity given to the affair should serve to bring home to tlie offenders tlie attitude of officialdom and the public.

“Four hockey players were suspended for varying periods, and one was cautioned after an inquiry by a special meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Association into an incident which occurred during a junior A grade game between Trinity and Air Force at Hagley Park, Christchurch, on Saturday. A report from the umpire alleged serious breaches of tile rules of tile game against live players, and stated that at one stage tlie captain of tlie Air Force team threatened to take his men off tlie field liecau.se of the dangerous play of the opposing side. Tile captain of the side against jyliicii tlie principal charges were made loft tlie field after half-time and refused to carry on. The chairman of the association described the situation as probably one of tlie worst that had deyoloped iu any sport. “Some of the charges were of such a nature that they were discussed in com-

mittee. and will be dealt witli again later when full evidence is available, 'file report of the umpire, Mr. 11. Teague, alleged that when he remonstrated with some of the Trinity men they insulted him. Some of the members had arrived JO minutes late in . the first place. The men with whom he remonstrated refused lo give him their names. He was informed that the captain of the Trinity team had left the field at half-time because he considered his men were out of control, and refused to obey his instructions. In the interests of the game Mr. Teague said he had had to take drastic steps before some player was injured. R. Meynell, captain of the Air Force team, thought it advisable to take his men off tlie field because of the dangerous play of the Trinity team, and it was only at the umpire’s request that the captain consented to play on. ■
