Snuff Again ?

s> Old Fashion Revived in the America Of Today ARE the days coming back when snuffboxes will again be the fashion? Will Americans revive the custom of colonial days and carry about with them as part of their conventional belongings the little gold or silver —sometimes jewelled — trinkets which used to be prized as an item offashionable dress and are to-day among collectors,’ treasures? Snuff is coming back into use, according to reports from various sources. An official of the American Tobacco Company, largest manufacturers of tobacco products in the world, stated recently that there had been a 20 per cent, increase in the past year in the use of snuff, which is a tobacco product. Another indication of the return to favour of this product so universally used by early Americans is found in the statement of a shop owner in Lexington Avenue who handles a special brand of imported Irish snuff. “’Ten years ago,” said this importer, “we used to sell around five pounds, of snuff a month. This was sold mainly to Irish families who had come hero from Belfast But to-day we are obliged to import around seventy-five pounds a month to satisfy our trade. “Many of my Irish customers declare that snuff is gooi. for a cold and even for sinus difficulties.” But although the Irish may still snuff snuff, the renewed use of this product, for the most pa “ is as a substitute for old-fashioned plug tobacco. Whether an increase in Its use will eventually bring back the snuffbox as a useful and necessary adjunct remains to be seen. “Have a pinch of snuff on me” may come to be a polite Americanism and as com i.only employed as “Have a cigarette?”
