Young Woman Sent to Borstal Institution

Arrested at Wellington on July 17, Hazel Margaret Howard, aged 20, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., qn four charges of theft from Auckland shops. She pleaded guilty to stealing a fur coat, hats, frocks and a coat of a total value of £4l. - The police said that the girl was a domestic from the South Island. It was alleged that she frequented hotels and Chinese premises. The girl made a statement from the dock denying‘the allegations that she frequented Chinese premises. Replying to the magistrate, Detec-tive-Sergeant Walsh said he could bring evidence to support the allegation. The police said the girl had served a term of 12 months in a Borstal institution. On one charge Mr. McKean ordered that the accused lie detained for 12 months in a Borstal institution, and on the other charges he convicted and discharged her.
