MAORI CLUB

Songs and Lecture at Monthly Meeting The Wellington Maori Club held its monthly social evening on Monday in the New Zealand Education Institute’s room. Members and guests tilled the room and were given an enjoyable evening. The National Anthem sung in Maori opened the proceedings, and the president, Mr. W. W. Bird, welcomed the visitors, among whom were members of the Ngati-Poneke Society. Mr. Klngi Tahiwi gave students of the Maori language opportunities of practising their speech by his asking questions in. Maori and requiring answers in the native tongue. Several pleasing songs were rendered both by members of the Ngati-Poneke and Maori Club choirs. Mr. Heuare Tahiwi led the audience in popular Maori songs. Mr. H. M. Christie delivered a lecture on “Miramar History.” He traced the line of tribes which had occupied the district for seven centuries and, by a map of Miramar, indicated the sites of strongholds and villages occupied by the ancient dwellers on the peninsula. References to some of the old traditions preserved by NgatiKahungunu were made, and tales of invasion told. The evening was concluded by singing, in Maori, “Home, Sweet Home.”

A black evening frock is the most useful standby in any wardrobe, and there’s absolutely nothing to wear like georgette. A black georgette gownskirt, wide —bodice, softly draped—a cluster of sliver dowers—or—a dash of brilliant colour —at Fashion House, Willis Street. —Advt.
