CAMERA CLUB MEETING
Results of July Competition “Architecture” was the subject for the July competition at the Wellington Camera Club's meeting. The championship was awarded to Mr. J. T. Salmon’s picture of the Dominion .Museum under floodlighting, and other results were as follows:—A grade: Mr. Salmon, 1 and 2; Messrs. R. J. Searle and J. W. Chap-man-Taylor, 3, equal. B grade: Mr. K. G. Killoil, 1; Mr. J. M. Kershaw, 2. Exhibition prints were also shown by Mr. J. W, Johnson.
The president, Air. A. S. Mitehell, who was in charge of the evening, gave some general practical advice to members, and also commented on the entries individually, making suggestions for improvement. He said that for a subject of this type it was wiser not to diffuse, the enlargement or to use a soft-focus lens', in order that details of carving and ornamentation might be sharply rendered. Although the structure should be reasonably large in the picture, adequate space should be allowed all. round, and particularly at the base, to avoid any sense of restriction of top-heaviness. If the top of the object were dark in colour, the foreground should also be heavy in tone. One of the most important points to be considered was the lighting, and Mr. Mitchell suggested that the photographer should try to visualise his subject as it would appear at various times of day. revisiting the scene when it was judged that the lighting would give the most relief—usually this would be found to be when the sun was to one side. As in most branches of photography. direct sunlight, especially if it could be arranged to emphasise the main point of interest, would help to secure a brighter and more attractive result.
