Meetings of Branches The May meeting of the Plimmerton Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs. Burd. There was a particularly good attendance, and two new members were welcomed. After tile usual institute song, business was discussed, and arrangements made for forthcoming federation meetings and home science demonstrations. The social hour was divided between community singing, twominute impromptu speeches, and an excellent little sketch in costume by four members or the drama circle. Hamua. Mrs. Hobbs presided at: the Hamua Women's Institute meeting. Mrs. Warren gave a demonstration on smocking. The “Golden Thread” talk was given by Mesdames Bailey and P. Galvin, the subject , being South Africa. Mrs. W. J. Smith was first and Mrs. Davies second in the “best bloom in the garden” competition. In the points prize competition for four oven scones. Mrs. Hobbs was the wini ner. The hostesses were Misses Joy Smith ami J. McLaughlin. Stokes Valley. The eighth birthday of the Stokes Valley Women’s Institute was celebrated at a recent meeting, which took the form of a social afternoon. Songs were given by Mrs. Vinsen, and monojogues by Mrs. Ring. After afternoon tea had been served. Mrs. Cording, the retiring presid ' cut the birthday cake, the eight candles of which had been lighted by the retiring secretary Mrs. Combe. A "rpsontation of a crystal vase was made to Mrs. Cording. She was presented with a shoulder spray from the dramatic circle. Mesdames Combe and Holloway were also the recipients of tokens of appreciation. Mesdames Cobby and Payne, conveners of the arts and crafts and sewing circle, were presented with posies. The Alicetown dramatic circle entertained with a humorous sketch presented by Mesdames Shand. Hart, Bathurst and Lockwood. Mrs. Vinsen was the producer. Upper Hutt. Tlie May meeting of the Upper Hutt Women's Institute was held recently, when a large gathering of members and visitors enjoyed a varied programme of community singing, competitions and dancing. Miss McGhie also sang, and Mrs. Harrison contributed two humorous recitations. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames W. Beech. S. Braid. Carruthers, Clyde, Collett, Denovan, C. Dalton, d’Ews, Fuhey, Fenn Edwards, Driscole, and Miss Dickson. Mrs;. Griffin, president, announced the results of the competitions, which were as follows:—Nightdress: Mrs. V. Williams. 1; Mrs. Hyslop, 2. Kiss cakes: Mrs. A. Hazelwood. 1; Mrs. J. Hazelwood, 2, Thrift article: Mrs. H. Wil- j liams, 1; Mrs. V. Williams, 2. i Mt. Bruce. The president. Mrs. McLachlan, presided over a large attendance of members at a meeting of the Mt. Bruce Women’s Institute, held recently, the occasion being the celebration of the institute’s third birthday. During the afternoon a dialogue was presented by Mrs. McLachlan and Miss M. Reader, and a duet was sung by Misses M. West, and P. Hunt. The menu competition was won by Mrs. Keir (Kaituna-Fernridge), and Miss J. Allington was the winner in the book competition. During the afternoon, the birthday cake was lit by Mrs. Daken and cut by Mrs. Reader. Wimbledon-Herbert ville. Mrs. F. Herrick presided at the May meeting of the Wirnbledon-Herbertville Women’s Institute. Mrs. Ralph A. Cochrane was the visitor for the afternoton. and gave a charming talk on the late King George’s silver jubilee, which was greatly appreciated by the members.

After the general business, afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mrs. N. Speedy and Mrs. F. Herrick. Mrs. P. Morgan had a very successful sales table.
