DISTRICT JOTTINGS

Changing System of Licensing Taxis COUNCILLOR’S OBJECTION He objected to any interference with the present method of licensing taxis, said Cr. G. H. Guthrie at last night’s meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council when a communication was read from the Transport Department regarding proposals; for the taxi industry. Cr. Guthrie said the Upper Hutt taxi drivers had always conducted their business in a satisfactory way and the proposal was only another “grab” by the State. It was stated that the council would lose on the basis of licences and fines collected for the financial year ended March, 1937, the sum of £215, including £6 for taxis. Sanitation Publicity. The borough had had enough publicity about sanitation to last it for the whole of its existence, said the deputy-mayor, Cr. F. P. Keys, at last night’s meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council in suggesting that the minutes of the meeting ■be adopted with the exception of that portion relating to sanitation, which should be taken in committee. The mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, asked if the accuracy of the minutes were questioned. Cr. Keys said there was more in the minutes than should be incorporated—a confidential’report. The mayor agreed the report was confidential and the minutes were adopted. Council Employees’ Holiday. The Upper Hutt Borough Council decided last night to grant all employees a full holiday on pay on Coronation Day. Late Council Meetings. He was sick and tired of it,'said Cr. G. H. Guthrie at last night’s Upper Hutt Borough Council meeting in appealing to members to co-operate in an endeavour to facilitate business of the council. Getting away from the meetings after midnight was “over the fence.” Last night’s meeting finished at 9 p.m.—the earliest for IS months. Woman Teacher Honoured. Miss Pbair, who has been engaged on the teaching staff of the Upper Hutt School for the past four years, was entertained at dinner last night at the Provincial Hotel by friends.
