PALMERSTON Y.M.C.A.

Appeal to City Council For Assistance

Dominion Speciv Service

Palmerston North, May 3. Presenting an appeal at to-night’s

meeting of the city council, a deputation from the Y.M.C.A. sought release from rates or an increase iu the council’s subsidy to the association. The mayor, welcoming the deputation, spoke appreciatively of the work of the Y.M.C.A. He felt that in appreciation of the work of the association the council might consider increasing its grant, if not prepared to reduce the rates on the property. Mr. T. R. Hodder, a member of tlie board of governors, referring to the steady increase in the rates on the property, said that in 1922 the association paid £l2 0/11. Tlie rate had steadily grown till it was £4O/1/- m 1926, and it now stood nt £44/7/4. <!(* association had to depend upon public support, having no other means of income, and had shown a loss on its operations for the past two years. While be realised that the council had no power to reduce the rates, the Gisborne City Council had secured authority to do so. and the Y.M.C.A. in that city had not been charged for the past three years. The board appreciated the financial assistance given by the couiicil. but the time had arrived when it might consider increasing the subsidy of £lO annually..

After the deputation had retired, the mayor moved that tlie matter be considered when the estimates were presented. This was agreed to.
