District magistrate in control of an area iu India of 6000 square miles with a population of about two million people, Mr. S. Ranganathan arrived at Wellington yesterday in the Awatea to spend a short holiday in New Zealand. He is accompanied by his wife and two sons.
Mr. Ranganathan, who was educated at Madras and later at Oxford, said the Indian criminal law closely resembled the English law, and the civil law also was based on the English law. Most of the offences he had to deal with were against property, such as burglary and theft, but generally speaking the law was well respected. During bis stay Mr. Ranganathan intends to study the procedure of the New Zealand debt adjustment courts, as it is expected that similar courts will be introduced in India.
