ACTIVITY IN WELLINGTON
An appeal to the public to lake a greater interest in reafforestation work was made by the president, Captain >S. Holm, at the annual meeting last night of the Wellington Beautifying Society.
Since the society came into existence two years ago it bad received £SBS from subscriptions and donations, and £72 by way of subsidy from the Unemployment Board, making a total of £660. Of that sain there was between £!)0 and £lOO left, said Captain Holin. The membership stood at 2SS. That was not a big number for a city the Pize of Wellington. A total of 13,700 trees and 1000 bulbs had been planted in the last two years. The work had been made possible through the enthusiasm of an energetic committee and a baud of loyal friends, including Mr. J. G. MaeKenzie. director of parks aud reserves. Mr. John Down, superintendent of the Mt. Crawford Prison, aud Mr. and Mrs. Sundgren. Karori. “The harbour board, which Ims a revenue of £500,000, has given us £lO. said Captain Holm. "We are not complaining. There is a lot of work for the board to do and if it dooes it we will be well satisfied. It has made a good start at the boat haa-bour. The city council has given nothing. Again we" are not complaining. If the council does the work we will be quite happy-” Mr. It. L. Mac>;ster said that the society would be glad of donations of seeds and plants from which cuttings could be taken.
