AUSTRALIAN WHEAT

Great Increase in Production Au unexpected increase in the production of wheat in New South 'Wales and Victoria represents an extra return of about 7,600,000 bushels on estimates made earlier in the season. At the prevailing price, this will add about £1,750,000 to the Australian wheat cheque. If the average Sydney price for the season to date is maintained, the New South Wales harvest of 51,840,000 bushels should be worth about £14,600,000. On the same basis' the Australian harvest of 149,579,000 bushels would be worth about £39,900,000. A comparison with last season’s average price suggests that these figures would represent an increase of from £4,000,000 to £5,000,000 in the New South Wales wheat cheque, and an increase of about £10,000,000 in the Australian wheat cheque. The figures are only approximate, because it is not known how much wheat was sold above or below last season’s average price. The Commonwealth Statistician (Dr. Roland Wilson) announced in Canberra last week that the revised figures for the production in Victoria disclosed an average yield of 17.9 bushels an aere, the highest average yield recorded in the State since 1870. Total production in Victoria would be 42,800,0(10 bushels, from 2.393.827 acres. In New South Wales the yield had also been unexpectedly heavy, averaging 13.84 bushels an aere. Total production for the State was 54.800,000 bushels, from 3,961,680 acres. The total Australian production would he 149,579.<X10 bushels, aud the average yield would be 12.11 bushels an acre. The total harvest for 1936-37 would be greater by 5,000,000 bushels than for the preceding season. Dr. Wilson said that it was estimated that, including the exportable surplus of 12.160.723 bushels ou hand when tne sea' son opened on December 1, a total of 105.739.723 bushels would bo available for export for tin- current wheat year. Of this. 28,674.478 bushels hud been exported between December 1 and February 28, leaving available for export in the remaining nine months another 77,065,245 bushels. The quantity of wheat available for export for the current year would be almost identical with that available last year. Goldmining Returns By Telegraph—Press Association. Hokitika, April 20. The Rhnti dredge return was 267.4 crude ounces of gold for 132 hours of working, 47,720 cubic yards being handled.
