The Upper Hutt Borough Council last night decided to open a fund in accordance with an appeal by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage,, that local bodies should support the King George V memorial fund for the establishment of permanent children’s health camps. Coronation Bali. Efforts are being made at Upper Hutt to stage a charity ball to mark the coronation. A meeting of representatives of all local sports and other bodies has been called, at which it is intended to set up local committees. Any profit, it is proposed, should be devoted to the district nurse fund. No Infantile Paralysis. Rumours to the effect that there had been one or two cases of infantile paralysis’ iu the borough of Upper Hutt were emphatically denied by the mayor, Mr. A. J.' -McCurdy, last night. Officers of the Department of Health, he stated, had given the borough a clean sheet. Upper Hutt Fire Calls. Nine calls were received by the Upper Hutt Volunteer Fire Brigade during the year, according to the annual report ot the brigade, a copy Of which was received at a meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night. Five were property fires, tiiree gorse or grass fires, and' one a false alarm. The brigade had a total strength of 13 tiremeu, one auxiliary fireman, and two messengers. Response to Lessons. Whm the pupils of Hutt Valley High School attended on Wednesday morning to collect their books, the opportunity was seized by the principal, Mr. J. N. Millard, and his staff, to set a week’s work on the board, so that the children could copy it down before returning home. The children have responded excellently. The first of the work returned for correction came to hand on Wednesday afternoon, and other batches have been steadily sent in. Instructions, were issued at the outset and the children have adhered rigidly to these. The only hitch was that a few of the first lessons to be returned did ’not carry the pupil’s name.
