BOYS’ INSTITUTE
Sir George Troup Re-elected President ylr. Justice Smith presided at the annual meeting of the Wellington Boys Institute, held in the hall, Tasman Street, last night. There was an attendance of over 60. Apologies for absence were received from the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. P. Fraser, who was represented by Mrs. Fraser; Sir George Troup, C.M.G., president of the institute; the Chief Justice, Kt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers: and Mr. W. A. Parton, a vice-president. "To my mind there is no more important work done in the community than that of the Boys’ Institute,” said the chairman in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet. The institute sought to help the boy not readily, reached by institutions such as the Y.M.C.A. To improve the boy’s mental, moral, and physical condition was to’ do something worth while. The institute was helping those boys who could not help themselves. Speaking, he said, on behalf ot the citizens who took a serious interest in the community, he assured the workers in the institute that their efforts were deeply valued. That the activities were well published showed that the Press considered them important. The proposed extension of the work to the suburbs around Miramar would be a forward move, and the executive was to be congratulated on its missionary spirit The chairman referred to the illness of Sir George Troup, who, he said, might 1 be.called the founder of the-in-stitute. He asked Lady Troup, who was present, to convey the meeting's pleasure at his progress, and its hope that he would make a speedy recovery. The motion was supported by Mrs. Fraser, who conveyed the Acting-Prime Minister’s, good wishes and congratulations on the progress made. Mrs. Fraser said she was particularly pleased with the proposal to extend the work to the outlying districts. The following office bearers were elected Patron, his Excellency the Governor-General, Viscount Galway; hon. president, Rev. J. R. Blanchard, B. ; president, Sir George Troup, C. ; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. T. Watkins, W. A. Parton, H. Leah; hon. secretary, Mr. J. D. Howitt; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. M. Barrett; hon. auditor, Mr. H. M. Smith, 8.C0m.; hon. solicitors, Messrs. Sladden and Stewart ; hon. physician, Dr. T. F. Corkill; committee of management, the permanent members and Messrs. G. R. Baudinet, D. Bowie, L. J. Calvert, Malcolm Fraser, J. E. F. Perry, H. R. Hicks and R. Spring. Votes of thanks to the honorary officials were moved by the Rev. Gordon McKenzie, to the honorary helpers by Mr. R. D. Moore, to the Press by Mr. R. Spring and to the chair by Mr. L. T. Watkins. All were carried.
