AN ENGLISH REPORT
Disease in New Zealand Pigs
“New Zealand is alarmed at rhe increasing incidence of tuberculosis among the pigs in the Dominion, and the matter is not without interest iu this country in view of the increasing quantities of pork arriving from New Zealand.
“The New Zealand Department of Agriculture, in its annual report, says the pigs affected represent 16.78 per cent, of the 768,976 slaughtered in the year. It is assumed that the chief initial source of infection is by milk and the by-produets of the dairy. “It is stated that tuberculosis in both the dairy herd and in pigs is commoner than is generally believed, and the Department of Agriculture warns pig-keepers against feeding their animals on dairy products derived from tubercular cows. Precautions are also advised, including the elimination of diseased cows. “During 1936 New Zealand sent to this country 579,086 cwt. of chilled or frozen pork, compared with 490,301 cwt. in 1935 and 414,275 cwt. in 1934.” This paragraph appeared in an important British farm journal, “The Farmer and Stockbreeder.” It is not good publicity. Within the next few months there will be several notable additions to Blenheim’s public buildings. It is many years since there has been such building activity in the town. More than £60,000 is being spent on four large buildings, the new courthouse, the main block of the new Marlborough College, the Blenheim Borough School, and a picture theatre. The courthouse, at -the corner of Seymour and Alfred Streets, is a contribution to the civic centre scheme, and the new Blenheim primary school, now nearly completed, is a fine example of the open-air type of school architecture. The main twostory block of the new secondary school will replace the 37-year-old wooden school, which, with a collection of makeshift buildings, has supplied the needs of secondary education in the town for a long time. The new theatre will be an up-to-date structure capable of seating nearly 1000. In design it is almost a replica of the Avon Theatre in Christchurch.
