More Permits Issued Last Year FEWER HOUSES ERECTED Over a fortnight ago the money value of buildings erected under city corporation permit in Wellington was published. The figures for the year have since been analysed in detail and have formed the subject of a report to the city council by the eity engineer. Mr. K. El Luke. This report states that the number of permits for buildings and alterations to buildings issued during the year was 1311, of a value of £916,397, as compared with 1161 permits of a value of £719,655 during the preced Ing 12 months. Those figures do not include the Government buildings which were completed or are now in course of erection, such as the big departmental block in Stout Street, the railway station and adjunctive buildings, the Government Life Insurance block, and the now block about to be erected for the Post and Telegraph Department in Herd Street. Such buildings represent a large amount of capital and were such permits included in the figures it would tiring Wellington's total to well over £1.000.000. The larger buildings for which permits were issued included tiie Waterloo Hotel, £72,000: the New Zealand Insurance Company Building, Featherston Street, £67.131; the South British Insurance Building, Lambton Quay, £40,387; Belcher Bros.’ Building, Kent Terrace, £12,200; Wool worths bulk store, Ghuznee Street, £9230; Vivian Properties’ warehouse, Vivian Street. £9500: tiie Oriental Bay bathing pavilion, £6756: and Van Staveren Bros.’ warehouse, Taranaki Street, £12,500 Several blocks of flats were autho rised, the largest being the Mayfair flats, on The Terrace, £24,000, Other blocks were built or are building in Hobson Street, £6760; Tinakori Road, £5670 and £5063; Dufferin Street, £8788; Wesley Road, £5690; and Oriental Parade, £12,900. Tiie report says that by far the greater amount of building work done (luring the year was in the erection of big office and warehouse buildings in the eity, and in shopping premises.
