Hutt Outplays Wellington SHANDON TOO STRONG FOR MANOR PARK Bryan Silk’s 68 A high standard of golf was attained in the first inter-club matches of the 1937 season in Wellington on Saturday. Ibis was largely due to the excellent condition of the courses, which have a generous sward of grgss as a result of the recent spell of warm weather following liberal rainfalls. Hutt defeated Wellington by 17 games to three, with four games halved. Hutt won the match between the A. teams at Heretaunga by 10 games to nil, with two games halved, and also took the match between the B teams, on the Hutt links, bv seven games to three, with two games squared. „ ' Shandon proved too strong for Manor Park in the first Watt Cup engagement of the season, which was played on the Shandon course. Shandon had a runaway victory by eight games to two, with two games halved, and also won the Ranish Cup match by seven games to three. HUTT’S DAY Wellington Overwhelmed For the past two years the Hutt club has had a very strong A team on paper, and on Saturday their members played up to their handicaps. In the match between the A teams, the best Wellington could do was to halve two games. Hutt winning the remaining ten games. Silk, the Hutt No. 1, who won the Wellington provincial championship at Miramar at Easter, maintained the brilliant form he displaced in that tournament in his match against M. Duncan at Heretaunga. Both players started off in promising fashion by halving the first hole in bogey 4, and both recording birdie 4 at the second (464 yards). Duncan caused a mild sensation by running down a 21-foot putt for a birdie 2 at the short third. A hook then started to trouble Duncan, but Silk went on to play masterly golf. Silk recorded birdie 4’s at the sixth (450 yards), and at the seventh (444 yards), which plneed hint 3 up. Duncan found the green with two spanking wooden shots with the wind at the eighth (536 yards), and got one back with a birdie 4. Silk struck trouble at this hole through slicing his drive among the poplar trees to the right of the fairway. They halved the thirteenth in 5, -and Silk took the match bv 5 up and 4 to go by winning the fourteenth in 3 to 5. They finished out the round, and Silk continued to play superlative golf. He ran down a 7-foot putt for a birdie 2 at the"short fifteenth, got a bogey 4 at the sixteenth, a birdie 3 at the seventeenth (354 yards), and a bogey 4 at the home hole, thus completing the home journey in 32, which gave him b 8 for the round. Fisher (Hutt) made a brilliant recovery to defeat S. G. Longuet by 2 and I.' Longuet was 3 up at the.turn, but the Hutt man did a fine home journey of on to take the match. MARY ALWARD CUP Manor Park and Shandon Draw The first Mary Alward Cup match of the season was placed on the Manor Park links on Saturday, and resulted in Manor Park and Shandon both winning five games.
