Recovery in Metals Issues BANKS MORE ACTIVE After a quiet opening on weak markets, business on the New Zealand Stock Exchanges made a good recovery last week and a substantial turnover was recorded, principally in banks, metals issues, and chain stores. Industrials were generally quiet with an easier trend. Government loans were in strong demand, but supplies were scarce and a moderate business was done «it slightly improved rates. Trading in local-body debentures was quiet, Auckland issues accounting for the bulk of the business. Amalgamated Brick (Wellington) debentures had sales at par. Good support was-accorded to banks, which were actively traded, especially New Zealands and Unions. The former advanced from 43/6 to 45/44. cum. dividend, and there was a sale of the B long-term mortgage issue at 2G/-: tional of New Zealand weakened on sales from 66/3 to 65/3. Commercial of Australia ordinaries were firmer at from iy/o to 19/81, and the preference sold at £9/8/-. Australasias sold at £l3, Adelaides at £6/8/9, Queenslands at £a/14/6. National of Australasia, £5 paid, at 17/6, and E.S. and A.’s at £6/10/- to £6 11/6. New South Wales were firm at 10/- to £37/12/6, with one transfer on the Svdney register at £3B. Unions advanced from £ll/o/- to £ll/8/-. Insurance, financial, and pastorals were quiet, and Goldsbrough Morts eased from 37/2 to 36/11. . , . , New Zealand industrials were quiet, breweries and meat-freezing issues being most favoured. Brices were on the easy side. Australian industrial and trading issues were dull,-, and several, leading shares were weaker. Australian Glass eased from 93/- to 91/9. Burns Philp from 77/9 to 76/9, British Tobaccos froin 51/to 50/2, Colonial Sugars from £45/u/6 to £44/17/6. and Hume Pipes from.2o/4 to 20/-. Dunlop-Perdriaus were little changed. There was a heavy turnover of Australian base metals issues, which, after a spasm of weakness, made a good recovery. Broken Hill Proprietary fell away from 84/- to 81/3, but regained practicallv all lost ground by the end of the week. Electrolytic Zincs reacted similar]v. Mount Lyells after touching 43/11 made a strong recovery to 48/-, with later sales slightly lower. Broken Hill Souths were a little firmer on the week. Mount Morgans weakened from 11/9 to 16/8. The Woolworths issues were very firm, New Zealands advancing to £B/5/-, with later sales at £8 and the Sydney issue moving up from £7/4/- to £7/14/6. The Svdney “rights” sold at from 90/3 to 102/6. Woolworths (W.A.) were done at £7 to sixpence higher. A feature of the market was the strong advance made by G. J. Coles. After weakening from £5/1/- to 98/6, they suddenly rose to business on Friday at £5/9/and £5/8/9, ex dividend. They were quoted in Wellington on Saturday at £5/6/-, sellers £5/7/-.
