PETONE OUTPLAYED
Diamond scored a clear-cut win over Petone in a match played under difficulties at Petone Recreation Ground. The strong, gusty southerly against which Petone had to contend in the first spell, had them all at sea, and they begau the s-ecoud spell with a two-goal deficit. Nicol scored Diamond’s first goal with a good drive, and Smith (Petone) put them further ahead when he deflected a shot from Gilchrist into his own goal. Diamond took full advantage of the wind, and their high passing' was a feature of the game. Haines was a steadier back than Brown, and though some of his misjudgments proved expensive, his heading was a treat to watch. The wind abated considerably in the second spell, but Petone made good use of it in the early stages, Leslie adding two clever goals to the score. At this stage they appeared to have the game won, but Diamond rallied, and D. Johnstou, Gilchrist and Davidson scored in fairly rapid succession. Diamond played steadily against the wind, and though Leslie went for a time to centre-half, he could not rally his men. Time and again Diamond came within an aco of scoring, only to see Haines clear. Craig played well on the wing for Petone, but the defence in the second half failed to stand up to repeated raids by the Diamond forwards, who kept their positions remarkably well. Petone, however, will not be caught napping next time. The teams were as follows: — Diamond: McLean; Morris, Cockburn; O’Leary, Geddes, Nicol: D. Johnston, Gilchrist. Davidson, Tucker, B. Johnstou. Petone: Boddy; Brown, Haines; Dewar, Cullen, Smith; White, Patterson, Leslie, Penman, Craig. RESULTS ELSEWHERE Bv Telcgranh—Press Association.
