AUSTRALIAN NAVAL SHIPS
Arrival at Auckland By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, April 16. Silently and impressively the remaining five ships of the Royal Australian Naval Squadron entered the Waitemata at 11 o’clock this morning. The display of strength and beauty was enhanced by sunshine that silvered the waters and cast reflections from the green hills in contrast to the grey symmetry of tlie naval vessels. Auckland is the last port of call of the Australian warships. Already formalities of welcome have been exelm nged. As the cruiser Sydney led the line past the Devonport naval base guards mounted the quarterdecks <>l the New Zealand ships, but the tribute was accompanied only by the shrilling of the boatswains’ whistles. Official calls were made Hu's morning on Rear-Admiral Banc -Toole on the Canberra by Commander C. B. Tinsley, offieer-iu-ehargo of the Devonport naval base. Hie mayor (Mr. Davis), and Air. 11. 11. McKenzie (deputy chairman of the harbour board). In order to give the officers and mon of the squadron an opportunity to visit Rotorua during their brief stay in Auckland the Government Tourist Bureau is endeavouring to arrange a special excursion by train for Sunday. The programme for the proposed visit has been drawn up and distributed to the various warships, and it will dtpend on the response received whether or not (lie special train will be run. An officer on the Canberra stated that (ho proposal would be welcomed by the whole sipmdroii. but it was hot possible to say off hand whether sufficient men would be available to justify the running of a special train.
