DISTRICT JOTTINGS
A Roadway Conducive to Speed PETONE ESPLANADE With its long, straight stretch of good bitumen surface, the Petone Esplanade provides a great temptation to speed-in-clined motorists, and it is not uncommon I’i see motorists exceeding the limit of 30 miles an hour along this roadway. The number of narrow roads that lead out on to the Esplanade from Jackson Street are a definite trap to the unwary speedster. and it is surprising that accidents are not more frequent. Y.M.C.A. Classes Shut Down. Because of the fresh incidence of infantile paralysis, the Hutt Valley Y.M. C.A. lias deemed it advisable to curtail its activities. All classes have been cancelled meantime, with the exception of the senior class. Footpath at Taita. A footpath is in course of construction at present from the Taita School along as far as the hotel. When the Government’s housing scheme is extended to this locality, as proposed, the footway will undoubtedly prove that it is fully warranted. Assisting Girl Guides. To assist members of the recently-form-ed St. Zita’s troop of Girl Guides at Petone, the parents’ committee yesterday conducted a successful jumble sale in a Jackson Street shop. The troop is for girls belonging to convent schools and has already a full complement. As some of its members are not in a position to buy the necessary outfit, they are to be assisted by the proceeds from yesterday’s sale. There was a wide variety of articles in the shop and good business was done.
