Evidence of Further Development WHAT THE FIGURES SHOW Building activity in the Hutt Valley has been solid during the past year, judging by figures made available to “The Dominion’’ yesterday. It is expected, however, that the financial year just opening will see a big increase in activity as a result of the State housing scheme. It is also understood that several large concerns have taken options over land in the portion set aside for industrial development, and will be erecting factories during the next 12 months.

A total of 134 permits was issued by the Petone Borough Council during the past 12 mouths, the total value of which was £42,842, as compared with £65,260 for which permits- were granted in the previous year. Major work in last year's total included additions to the factories of two large motor works, one accounting for £6OOO, anil the other for £3OOO. Additions to a dye works in the borough were responsible for £2OOO. Then there was the erection of a new building at the Hutt Valiev Memorial Technical College. This being a Government work, however, no permit was issued in respect of it, and the amount involved is therefore not included in the figures supplied by the council. During March permits were issued to the value of £1575. as compared with £5418 for the correspond Ing month last year.

Figures for the year’s activity in the Lower Hutt borough were not available yesterday, but during March 21 permits were issued, the total value of which was £10,219. .Most of the permits were for dwellings, and additions or alterations to business premises. The largest was for £3179, representing the cost of the now assembly ball at the Hutt Valley High School, work on which was only put in hand last week Evidence of the steady growth ot Ihe Eastbourne borough is relleeted in ilie year's figures. These show that 66 permits were granted, and the total value of the building work involved was £17,176. There was a decided slackening-off last month, and only one permit for £3O was put through.
