N.Z. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

Wellington Branch Report

The membership of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, according to the report read at the sixty-third annual meeting, stands at 370 senior, 10 honorary and 14 junior members.

“The year ended has seen a considerable restoration of conditions existing before the depression; the readmission of the five-year-olds, the abandonment of the rationing scheme, the reopening of the training colleges,” the report stated. “These are some of the outstanding items in which recovery has been made. Members are looking forward with hope to the promised reorganisation of the education system and particularly to the Education Bill which is to be presented to Parliament this year. We hope this will mark a decisive forward move in the history of education in New Zealand. “The committee of branches of the N.Z.E.I. in the Wellington Education Board has continued its work on behalf of the whole of the teachers in the board’s area. Recognised by the board as the channel through which matters affecting all teachers should be represented, the committee, after its annual meeting held on December 5, discussed various matters with the senior inspector and the secretary of the board. The spirit of co-operation at this discussion and the assurance of sympathetic consideration of the proposals of the committee augur well for the future of this new means of contact. Matters discussed included advertisement of contributing schools as such, a scheme for centres for repair and maintenance work throughout the board, abolition of liquor at gatherings held in school buildings, advertisement of positions resultant on upgrading and relations with the itinerant instructors.” The officers of the committee of branches for the year are: Mr. W. Martin, president; Mr. W. H. Smith, vicepresident ; and Mr. M. Riske, secretarytreasurer.” The officers for the ensuing year are: President, Mr. W. Martin; vicepresident, Mr. W. D. Burgess; secretary, Miss Jean Combs; treasurer, Mr. L. H. Stannard; committee, Misses A. Hilliard, I. Cornwall, and W. Shortall and Messrs. Campbell, Robertson and M. Riske.
