Joy In Gems

Constant Stimulus To A Woman I believe every woman should have at least one beautiful gem. Its value is unimportant. It may be a semiprecious stone that cost only, a tew pounds, but if she selects it with care —learns something about its composition, source, and cutting, and loves it for its colour, radiance, and character —it. will give her a constant spiritual stimulus. It will give her vastly more pleasure than masses of precious stones worn by women who merely want to show off. The e'arth—tolling, quaking, erupting—after millions of years has produced stones which are breath-taking in their splendour. The ancients said that precious stones lived and breathed and had souls. I am not sure they were wrong, for at times, with a magnificent gem in my hands, I have felt myself in the presence of a spiritual something that e mortals cannot understand. I believe there are thousands of women of moderate means who could wear beautiful and inexpensive gems, to their spiritual and physical advantage. —Herbert P. Whitlock, in “American Magazine.”
