RECREATION GROUND AT PAREMATA

Negotiations For Purchase

of Area

When the new road bridge at Paremata was opened last year, Mr. R. L. Button, a member of the Hutt County Council, mentioned that there was a chance offering of securing the best recreation ground possible for the district in tiie land that lay between the railway tracks and the sea to the north of the bridge. This suggestion has received the support of many people, including Mr. W. H. Field, who mentioned the matter at the recent gathering in his honour at Paekakariki. Now negotiations are being conducted between the Hutt County Council and the Walker Estate for the purchase of some 28 acres of the land referred to. This area is that which has boasted a landmark for over 50 years in the old Paremata redoubt, erected for and occupied by troops at the time of the Maori unrest iu the early days of settlement in that quarter. There was an outpost at this redoubt and a camp of mounted men at Pahautanui to re■pel a possible raid upon Wellington by the West Coast Natives. At the last meeting of the Makara County Council Mr. R. W. Bothamley suggested that that body should contribute £lOO toward the cost of purchasing the land, but it was decided to seek further information before making that offer.
