LAWN TENNIS

Wellington Easter Tournament

MISS DOUTHETT BEATS MRS. LATHAM

Mixed Doubles to R. Ferkins and Miss Nicholls

The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association’s Easter tournament and the New Zealand junior championships tournament were continued yesterday on the h dimeton association's grounds at Miramar. Due to rain overnight a start was not made until 11 o’clock, and then on hard courts. Later in the day some of the Wellington championship matches were played on the grass courts which, be-e-use of the rain, were on the heaty side, although playing very truly. Until late in the afternoon high-class tennis was quite impossible, as a strong northerly wind was blowing. Women’s Singles. Mrs. A. D. Latham lost her title of women’s champion when she was decisively beaten in the final of the womens singles by Miss Joyce Douthett, in straight sets. When they played tlie wind was at full strength. Mrs. Latham was quite unable to handle the conditions, even resorting to serving underhand to avoid double faults, the ball in the overhead service being blown from her. before she could hit it accurately. >or m volleying or driving could she judge the wind. With the wind behind her she overhit off the ground and on the volley, or failed to get to Miss Douthett’s short

ones With the wind against her she was unable to get length, and on other occasions failed to deal with Miss Douthett s deep shots, which also carried plenty of pace. . . , Miss Douthett coped with the wind brilliantly. She played to the lines with excellent judgment when she had the wind behind her, took the net frequently and volleyed accurately; drove with strength against the wind, and served finely. There was never any doubt about the result of the match. Ferkins Beats Latham. A. D. Latham wentdown to R. Ferkins in a match in which he was unable to control his shots iu the wind to anywhere near the same extent as his opponent, who was aggressive from the net at every opportunity. Playing against the wind Latham could do nothing to dislodge Ferkins from the net. Smashing with accurate placements Ferkins won numerous points. Lobbing plays a big part in Latham's game, and lobbing with accuracy in such a wind was impossible. Mixed Doubles. In the semi-final of the mixed doubles K. Dyer and Miss J. Douthett played sound and often brilliant tennis against 11. Ferkins and Miss D. Nicholls. They saved match point against them at 6-5 to win the second set S-6. Then, iu the third set they collapsed. First Miss Douthett could do nothing right, and then Dyer kept her company. When the match was started the wind had died down considerably. Hence the players could exercise skill, playing to the lines and lobbing when circumstances die-'

tated. For the first two sets Miss Douthett drove, backhand and forehand, with consistency and length, and volleyed and smashed brilliantly. Miss Nicholls was sound in her driving from the back of the court, although she allowed herself to be caught at half-court too often. Ferkins played soundly in all departments, his smashing and his volleying to open spaces down mid-court being features. Dyer's low volleying was accurate, his drives, backhand and forehand, were fast and low, his smashing forceful, and his service fast, with plenty of kick in it. With all four players up to the mark some fine rallies were seen in the first two sets. The third set was almost devoid of rallies.

The final was not so good as the semifinal match and was played in a failing light. Miss Nicholls kept great length with her drives from backhand, while Ferkins at the net volleyed or smashed in a way that Latham and Mrs. Latham were unable to deal with, not seeing the ball properly in the bad light. I*’ollowing are the results:—

NEW ZEALAND JUNIOR TOURNAMENT Yesterday’s Results I Interest was maintained in the New Zealand junior lawn tennis championships yesterday, but the wind played havoc with the standard of the matches. Only toward the end of the day, when the wind dropped, could the players do themselves justice. The most exciting match was a boys doubles in which Painter and Gyles beat Doherty and Kelly in a long three-set affair after the latter pair held match point and the former pair several match points. Despite the strain on all four players the standard was high, the boys not getting down to pat-ball. Many of the rallies were long. Doherty, with wise design, was unfortunate enough to make mistakes at the net at vital times as he went for angled volleys. Gyles, too, made mistakes in volleying. Kelly was fairly steady, but lie also missed with aggressive drives. Painter was the steadiest player of the four, and in the end really steered his side through the shoals to victory. Following are the results:— Boys’ Singles. Third round: O. Satchell beat R. Blair, 5- 6-1, 6-0; S. Painter beat G. E. Brown, 6- 6-3; J. E. Walker beat A. S. Burns, G-5. 4-6, 6-2; S. Watson beat C. W. Fourth round: Watson beat Walker, 6-3, 6-2; Gair beat Hamilton, (1-5, 3-IJ, 6-2. Girls’ Singles.
