Of this total, the Port ot’ London accounted for 37.7 per cent., or £466.724,261. The value of exports-shipped through the Port ot London was £145.333.252. This represents 30-2 per cent, of the total exports ot tlie United Kingdom, the highest percentage recorded for 20 years, and an increase of £ 13.0+5,147 over 1934. Imports into London during the same year were valued at £321,391,009.

LONDON’S SHIPPING. During the week ended February 12. 1021 vessels, representing 1,038,312 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these. 499 vessels (814.258 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports and 522 vessels (224,054 net repnster tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. The arrivals included six meat cargoes, viz., four from Australia and two from New Zealand, comprising 191.000 carcases of lamb and mutton, 4000 quarters of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits and sundries. FRENCH SUBSIDY ALLOCATIONS. The allocations to the French merchant fleet in the 19"7 Budget estimates total a little under 912 million fr. This includes the following itemised subsidies: Credit maritime. 29.500.000 f r.; general subsidy- to merchant shipping, 90.000,000 fr.; compensation for the new social charges, 50.250.000 fr.; Compagnie Geuerale Transatlantique’s services, 135,000,000 fr.; Brazil and River Plate services, 32,000.000 fr.; Atessageries Alaritimes’ services to the Near East. Far East and Indian Ocean, 265.000.000 fr.; and Corsica services, 14 000.000 fr. • and subsidy to deep-sea fishing, 14,400.000 fr. The Bill incorporating these grants provides for the extension of the Tasso law of July 12. 1934, which covers the subsidies to shipping other than mall services, until December 31 next, while the law of August 26. 1936. providin’- the above-mentioned compensation for the new social charges, increased wages, etc., and other expenses which the present Government forced upon shipowners on coining to power, has been extended to March 31 only. It appears that no extra provision is being made for harbour improvements for, in the estimates of the Ministry of Public Works the maritime grants total 76 million fr., which is practically the same amount as the harbour dues levied by the Government.
