PARAMOUNT THEATRE
“Show Boat” That popular musical film of last year, “.Show Boat,” starring Irene Dunned Allan Jones, Paul Robeson, Charles Winninger, and Helen .Morgan, is having a return season at the Paramount Theatre, where it opened on Saturday night. Even those who have seen this remarkable show will want to hear again the superb singing of Paul Robeson, who takes the part of “Lazy Joe.” He is heard singing "01’ .Man River.” “Can't Help Lovin’ that .Man of Mine,” and “It Still Suits Me.” Allan Jones and Irene Dunne are heard in some entertaining duets, the first being ' Make Believe,” where the voices of Air. Jones and .Miss Dunne tire heard to advantage, more so in the former song. Charles Winninger, as the captain of the “Show Boat,” provides most of the humour of the picture, and with his wit he almost takes the picture fro.m the two stars. Helen AV estley as Mrs. Hawkes, the captain’s wife, plays her part excellently, as the wife “who .always knows.” The picture opens with the arrival of the show boat at a little town on the Mississippi, where complications set in concerning the two leading whereby they are forced t<> leave the show boat. It is here that .Miss Dunne, much against her mother's wish, and Allan Jones come into their own as the new leading couple of the show. Eventually these two are married, also much against her mother’s wish. There is not a. moment in “Show Boat” in which, the interest and the charm of the picture falls.
