OPTIMISTS’ CLUB ANNUAL MEETING
At the Y.M.C.A. Optimists’ Club annual meeting this week Mr. R. H. D. Hall, immediate past chief optimist, presided over a good gathering of members and their friends. Community singing was led by Mr. AV. 11. Hindle, with Mr. J. N. Duncan at the piano, and items were presented by Jlessrs. AV. McKeon and AV. J. Mason. Several new members were initiated, after which the annual business session was held. A report for the year 1936, read by the secretary, Mr. N. N. Breen, was adopted. The report referred to the loss sustained through the death of Mr. G. Herfort, and also to the serious illness of Mr. G. M. Silver. During the period there had been an increase in membership, and the financial statement showed a small credit balance. Mr. J. F. Buckrell was installed as chief optimist for the ensuing season, and in a brief address he stated his conviction of the need for a soundly-based optimism in the world to-day. He urged members to keep in mind the true implications of the term "optimism.” Other officers elected were: —First deputy chief. Mr. D. L. Gibson; second deputy chi?f. the general secretary of the association, M.. L. J. Greenberg; immediate past chief optimist, Mr. R. 11. D. Hall; hon. secretary. Mr. N. N. Breen; sheriff, Mr. J. G. Oliver; padre. Rev. AA'. Gilmour; musical directors. Messrs. AV. 11. Hindle and J. N. Duncan : convener service committee. Mr. H. E. Brooker; fellowship and lookout committee, joint conveners, Messrs. G. Thomas and AA'. Christie; convener, luncheon hospitality committee, Mr. J. F. Johnson; staff representative, Mr. J. AVhite.
