Bowler hats can be freshened if you hold a piece of velvet in front of the lire until thoroughly hot, then rub the felt with this. Repeat two or three times before brushing in the usual way. Light-coloured felt can be given a quick clean with half a pint of cornmeal mixed with a quarter of a cupful each of common salt and flour. Rub this over the hat, leave for an hour or two and brush out. Steaming revives both pile and colour. Peroxide of hydrogen is good for cleaning light straw bats (boaters especially) before they are put away. Apply with a toothbrush, then rinse quickly with cold water and put the hat to dry in the open air.
