NEW ASSEMBLY HALL

Construction Under Way at High School

A start has been made with the construction of an assemblj' hall at the Hutt Valley High School, and good progress has already been made with the laying of the concrete foundations. It is expected the building, which will cost more than £3500, will be completed within four months. This work will fulfil a .long-felt need and should be of great assistance in moulding stronger community life in the school. For several years past an assembly hall has been an objective paramount in the minds of workers for the school. While efforts in the past have proved pleasingly successful and have spoken highly for the energy of those promoting them', the object “ e would not yet have been at a stage or realisation had it not been for the Government subsidy of £2 for £l.

It is expected that the foundations will be completed to-day, and the constructional work will be proceeded -with, immediately after the Easter vacation. The building is to be in wood, with iron roofing. A pleasing interior finish has been planned. To the window height the lining will be of polished heart rimu, and above that: level dono-conno lining will be used. There will be a beam ceiling and this will also be of heart rimu, with dono-conno lining. There is to be a 22ft. long covered corridor joining the new building, the site of which is in the quadrangle, to the main building. The length of the hall overall, excluding this corridor, will 1)0 105 ft:., and the width will be 45ft. The auditorium will be 80ft. by 46ft., and the stage 25ft. in width with a depth of 15ft. On each side of this there will be dressing rooms. Provision has been made in the plans for two spacious cloakrooms at the end nearest the main building. The dimensions of these will be 12ft. by 9ft. 6in. Double doors are to be provided on each side of the auditorium so as to give emergency exits.

By linking the hall to the main building by means of a corridor the children will be able to gain access to it without losing the benefits of cover. Yet another advantage is that it will enable the school pupils to be assembled iu it quickly from the classrooms. Likewise little time will be lost in emptying it after assembly.

ALICETOWN WOMEN’S CLUB

An interesting feature of the March meeting of the Alicetown Women’s Club was a pattern-cutting demonstration by Mrs. Dumb. She explained each stage of the process clearly and concisely, stating that patterns cut correctly by Hie method described obviated the necessity of fitting, which was always a difficult matter for the home dressmaker. Airs Lumb was thanked for her demonstration, and was presented with a shoulder spray.

Items were given by Airs. W. Coleman (songs) and by Mrs. Clark (elocutionary). Airs. Seagar was the winner of the competition for the best hand-made buttonhole, ami Mrs. Hart won the guessing competition.
