Age Marking of Sheep

The New South Wales Graziers’ Association has resolved that the Government be requested to establish a compulsory and uniform system of age marking of all flock sheep throughout the State.

Another motion passed was one asking the Federal Government of Australia to proclaim a reward of £lO,OOO to be paid to “any citizen of the world who can discover an efficient specific to eradicate thoroughly the sheep blowfly.” New Zealand is known to greenkeepers and lawn makers the world over for its Waiapu Browntop, recognised as one of the great lawn grasses. I am informed that the grass was originally introduced to New Zealand in the bedding of Nova Scotian settlers, who came from Canada’s eastern seaboard some 70 years ago, and settled in North Auckland.

While discussing the question of guaranteed prices for sheep-farmers’ products, a farmer of my acquaintance remarked that a year or so ago he was “taking castor-oil.” Now he is enjoying “champagne.” He did not want the "small-beer” of a guaranteed price, but said he would sooner take his chance of what might come, even though he knew that he would have to face “castor oil” again in the future.
