HORSES FOR SOUTH

Marton and Trentham Representatives NOTES AND COMMENTS New Hurdlers to Make Appearance (Br The Watuhek.) Chief Ranger, Brigadore, Red Suu, and Sunee were shipped to Ricearton last night. Wil lip Win. There is a strong body of opinion in the south that favours Willie Win for the Great Autumn Handicap.

Good Response. One of the pieusing features of the Feilding acceptances is the good response of the hurdlers. Hunting Queen is due to make an interesting reappearance as a jumper. Will Be a Good Meeting.

Splendid nominations were received for the autumn meeting of the Manuwatu Racing Club. There are no fewer than 43 in the Prince of Wales Handicap. Showed Good Form on Flat.

Collision is an interesting entrant for the hurdle races at Manawatu. At his best before he went wrong Collision was a good galloper. Reports from Woodville show that he has shown promise as a jumper. High-priced Colt Named.

The name of Cortina has been claimed for the Limoud—Curtain colt for which Mr. G. J. Barton paid 1000 guineas at the National Sales in .January. This youngster is a full-brother to Gladswood, Pelmet, and Smoke Screen, also to Load Applause, recently destroyed while on his way to India.

Silver Ring. Silver Ring was due at Ricearton yesterday. According to reports from Greymouth, the Silverado gelding h is improved since his racing at Wellington.

Dual Engagement. Lady Ina is engaged in the sprint events at both Feilding and Wairarapa. Have Done Well.

The Great. Easter favourites, Paper Slipper and Gold Boa, have both gone on the right way since racing at Trentham.

A Picture of Condition. If Chief Ranger should fail in his mission to the C.J.C. meeting it will not be on the score of condition. He is looking exceptionally well.

Galloped Well. Argentic, who did not start at Trentham on account of the soft track, has been doing good work at Ricearton, and his mile in 1.42 J pn Tuesday was one of the best efforts of the morning.

A Prospect. Brigadore’s owner-trainer is confident his horse will run well in bis hurdle engagements at the C.J.C. meeting. He did not show up at Wellington, but this he says was due to the soft track. Brigadore at his best showed high-class possibilities as a jumper, but he went off later. Visitor from South Africa.

On Friday, March 12, Mr. D. A. Mackay, a visitor from South Africa, was entertained at lunch by Melbourne racing journalists. .Mr. .Mackay, himself a racing journalist in Johannesburg, remarked that he would like to take back with him a horse that could run a mile in 1.40 on the South African tracks. He explained that owing to the tracks being hard and fast, and being a mile above sea level, the air was so ratified that horses did not seem to be able to make fast times. Mr. Mackay said that, last year 130 English horses had been imported to South Africa, but in the last 30 vears only three horses had been imported from Australia. “I hope to prove.” he added, ‘‘that Australian horses can more than hold their own with English horses in South Africa, and I hope to be instrumental in creating a fresh demand for gallopers bred in Australia.” Mr. Mackay bought several yearlings at the Melbourne yearling sales, aud also purchased the two-year-old Thracian colt Gondolier. He is going on to Sydney for the yearling sales, and hopes to buy several more youngsters. The horses will be shipped to South Africa early in April.

To Ride at Feilding. The lightweight jockey L. Clifford will be riding at the Feilding Racing Club's antiunn meeting. 11> mounts will include One Wbetu, Lickeiu, Roscrana and Flying Chief.

Billy Boy. When Billy Boy contests the Autumn Steejjlechase at Ellerslje next Monday it yrjll be his sixth appearance in the race. The first time lie started in the event was when he won in 1932, and he was third in 1933, fourth in 1934, third in 1935, and fourth in 1936. The old fellow also has a fine record in the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton. He won in 1932, was fourth in 1933, third in 1934, third in 1935, and second in 1936, so that he has weighed in on eacht of the five occasions he has run—a remarkable’feat. Although he is now in his thirteenth year. Billy Boy is parrying his increasing years lightly and bearing a very bright appearance. Moreover, he looks more robust than at any previous stage of his career, and his owner-trainer, R. W. A. Lewis, is looking forward to the coming jumping season very hopefully. Billy Bov does not appear ready yet. but he has accomplished a good deal of woijj and is infusing plenty of dash into his tasks. Present indications are that he has a good deal of usefulness yet ahead of him. J. H,’Mcßae will ride him in his principal engagements this year. Riders at Ellerslie.
