JUNIOR BOWLERS
Wellington Singles Championship G. C. smith, KELBURN, WINS Tlie Kelburn Bowling Club's representative, G. C. Smith, won the junior singles championship of the Wellington Bowling Centre yesterday. The junior champion of champions event, has been inaugurated this season as the result of a cup being given for it by Mr. L. Smith. Mr. anil Mrs. Smith watched the games at the Wellington club's greens yesterday. Bowlers who have been playing the game for one or two seasons come within the definition of ’•junior,” but quite a large proportion of the participants in yesterday's games were first-season players'. The standard of play generally was unexpectedly high. The final between Smith and the Seatoun representatip-e, J. It. Williams, came to an exciting climax. M illiams played good bowls during the day, but. when lie niet Smith it seemed after a few heads had been decided that he had met a more consistent player. On nearly every head Smith had beaten Williams to the draw, and when the mat went down the 15th time the score was 14-3 in favour of Kelburn. Then, however, Williams struck form, and won head after head until with a three on the 20th, he brought the totals even. Last head, Williams drew right on to the kitty, to beat his opponent's two counters. Smith, who several times displayed ability to drive accurately, took it out. Williams, with his next and last bowl, drew the shot again, but Smith killed the head. When the head was played again, Williams lay two shots, but Smith beat them with his second to lust bowl, and Williams's last lacked sufficient weight to get into shot position. The game ended with Kelburn one up. Results in Detail. The results are as follows:— First round: Thorndon (O. N. Kerr) beat Upper Hutt, by default; Victoria (C. Watts I beat Woburn by default.
