CAMERA CLUB MEETING
Landscapes Competition
A helpful talk was given by Mr. J. W. Chapman-Taylor at the recent meeting of the Wellington Camera Club, when “Landscapes” was the subject, set for the monthly competition. He pointed out the infinite variety of results which could be obtained by photographing the same piece of countryside under different lightings, at various times of day and during different seasons. The composition of a picture was, of course, all-important, and the speaker advised careful study of the ground-glass focusing screen, where the picture could be seen flat much as it would appear in the print. If the glass were divided by light marks into thirds, horizontally and vertically, it would be found that a satisfactory place for the principal object in the scene would be one of the four points of intersection, while the balancing object or tone mass — which should be decidedly secondary in importance—could be placed near one of the other “points.” According to the beauty or otherwise of the sky. the horizon line should be approximately onethird or two-thirds up the picture space, with “leading-in” lines to help the composition and avoid the appearance of all the objects being in the one plane. Wellgrouped animals such as cows or horses, or an appropriately dressed and occupied figure, usually added to the interest of a scene. The speaker, however. strongly stressed the need for simplicity and selection in composing the picture.
Results of the competition were:— Champion. Messrs. Chajmian-Ta.vlor and Salmon (equal). A grade: Mr. Salmon, 1 : Mr. Patehett, 2; Mr. Chapman-Taylor, 3. B grade: Mr. Clift. 1; Mr. Krebs. 2: Mr. Kershaw, 3.
