MEMORIAL TABLET

Waikouaiti Health Camp UNVEILING CEREMONY A large number of supporters of the health camp movement and residents of the district were present yesterday at the Waikouaiti Health Camp to witness the unveiling of a memorial tablet and a photograpn commemorating the name of Mrs. George Roberts, in whose memory her daughter, Mrs. Douglas Whyte, Wellington, recently gave the new wing of the camp known as the Violet Roberts Memorial Hall and Dormitory. The Mayor of Waikouaiti, Mr. A. Fell, presided, and associated with him on the platform were Mrs. Fraser, wife of the Minister of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser), Mrs. R. Kennedy, vice-presi-dent of the Otago Children’s Health Camp Association, and Mrs. Marshal! Macdonald.

Mrs. Fraser paid a tribute to the work of those who had organised the camp, making particular mention of Mrs. Marshall Macdonald, who had given such yeoman service on behalf of the movement. There was no more important work than that of the children’s health camps, and to such an extent did the public realise this that a fund known as the King George V Memorial Fund was to be devoted toward the establishment of permanent health camps throughout New Zealand. Mrs. Fraser paid a tribute to the efficient manner in which the camp was organised, and made special reference to the officers of the Post and Telegraph Department who had voluntarily shouldered the work of raising funds in the various districts. Mrs. Fraser then unveiled a photograph of Mrs. Roberts and the tablet, which hears the inscription: “This hall and dormitory were built for the benefit of children and to commemorate the name of Violet Eulalie Roberts.” Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Macdonald also spoke, and later the visitors were the guests at afternoon tea of the Waikouaiti Women's Institute and the Waikouaiti branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mrs. ’Whyte and Lady Roberts both travelled from "Wellington for the occasion.
