GOVERNMENT HOUSING

Mill and Other Buildings at

Lower Hutt START AFTER EASTER Work in the establishment of a depot at Waterloo, Lower Hutt, to serve the requirements in the erection of 280 dwellings in the neighbourhood under the Government’s housing scheme, is being Hushed ahead. While the work will be largely governed bv the timber supplies available, it is exuected at present that a start will be made with houses in the Hutt Valley about a fortnight after Easter. There is quite a hive of industry just now on a Government site alongside the Waterloo railway station. Carpenters are busy erecting the necessary buildings, and work on these is now nearing completion. A mill building 200 ft. long and 20ft. wide is almost completed. Machinery was delivered yesterday, and engineers will assemble this at an early date. Along one side of this arc to be laid two tramway lines for the purpose of shifting the timber easily in its process through the mill. On the other side will be a roadway for the use of motor-lorries employed in carting the timber to the building sites. At this mill rough timber only will be treated, and all the dressed timber will be drawn from the factory at Kaiwarra. Five saws, including twin and gnu saws, are to be installed so that all the necessary classes of work can be carried out. To the north of the mill is located a main office and storeroom which is 40ft. by 35ft., and beyond that again is a plumbing establishment and a paint-shop erected by the contracting Already 130,000 ft. of timber have arrived at the site, but it is stated that this is not nearly sufficient to cope with the requirements. These supplies have been drawn from different parts of the Dominion. More will be arriving almost daily for spine time to come. The progress of the work will depend upon the timber supplies, and when sufficient have arrived the work on the houses will be put in hand.
