Surrey, where il had been slowed since tlie seventeenth ceniury. was bought by Mr. Arthur de Casseres, tlie noted art dealer, for £12.705 at an auction on tlie premises after spirited bidding. It was a portrait of a man in a black coat and white ruffles, by Franz Hals, a Dutch portrait artist second only to Rembrandt.
Nonsuch was originally a palace and was given by King Charles 11 to one of bis mistresses, the Duchess of Cleveland. It lias been for many years unoccupied, and was bought from the trustees, the Walker family, to form pari of London's green belt. Mr. de Casseres accidentally found the pieiure. tin* most important an discovery for many years, when inspecting the lots |*riot to the sale.
