BRUSHING INTO BEAUTY

Shingled Heads Can Be Lovelier Than The Flowing Tresses Of Olden Days

Beauty Series No. 3—By Beverley Joy

"yyHEN women wore long hair down to their waistline, brushing was a necessity. But short hair does not get into a hopel&ss tangle if you leave it uncombed for half a day, and consequently it is often neglected. But a clean and glossy head of hair makes all the difference to a woman’s appearance. Then, too, there are the fascinating modern coiffures that were denied to our grandmothers with their piled “buns” and heavy plaits. At the end of the summer, hair is at its worst and it requires regular but simple treatment to restore its vitality.

r piIERE is only one good remedy for dry and dead-looking hair. It; is to brush, brush and brush again. A number of women are under the impression that brushing will spoil their permanent wave, lint this is not the case. If you have a good wave and set. you will find the hairbrush will improve il. Some of Hie sebaceous oil will he transferred from the roots along the shaft of the hair, to give it a more natural and glossy appearance. Thus the wave will be softened, the hair growth promoted and the scalp will become more healthy.

If, while you arc brushing your hair, you apply some of the following lotion to the scalp, it will feel wonderfully invigorated. First pour a tablespoonfill of eau-de-cologne into a saucer ami then add a few drops of ammonia, Dab some cotton wool into the mixture and then apply to the scalp. Wait several minutes for the spirit to evaporale and then .give a brisk brushing. By doing I his you will have cleansed the scalp, removed some of the surplus oil from the roots of the hair, and at the same time your scalp will tingle with that healthy feeling which eau-de-cologne always creates. The treatment will leave the hair neither wet nor greasy. Right Way to Brush. \VHEN brushing your hair, remem- ’’ her that there is a right and a wrong way even of doing this simple job. Whether yours is a permanent or a natural wave, brush your hair in separate strands. Never, never run the brush straight, down the head, as that will drag out the wave. Moreover, it will not invigorate the scalp. So first separate the hair into small strands, hold them straight out from the head and run the brush down them, away from the head. Keep doing this until the scalp tingles and glows with the new blood you arc bringing to the surface.

Have ,vou ever thought that the top of your head is Hie only part of your body that never receives exercise? As the hair is fed liy Hie bloodstream, you can realise how important it is that vou use a brush regularly. It will tend

to bring fresh cells to the roots and thereby give your hair new life. If your hair is very dry, ir will be necessary for you to apply oil to the roots. Massage a little vegetable oil well into the scalp and again give a good brush. This will carry the oil down the rest of the hair, but the proportion will be so minute that you will not feel at all greasy. Make a series of small partings all over the head to apply the oil, which will not then go ou the hair until you brush it down the shafts. By this treatment the hair will acquire a natural gloss, and even your friends will not detect that it. i.s not. natural. Care for the Permanent War e. Z tONSIDERING the number of women who have permanent waves, it is remarkable how few know how to look after them. Do nor comb them haphazardly. but press each in with your lingers. Do not run the comb through you,. curls so that they will stand out in a frizz. Comb each curl separately over your linger, ami if it is unruly place a pin or t"'o in it. for about, half au hour. At. night time, if you are a restless sleeper, wear one of those slumber nets that you can procure from any hairdresser.

If you are a brunette, why not enhance" your appearance by having a henna rinse occasionally'! Bring out those beautiful reddish glims. After your usual shampoo add a little henna to your final rinsing water and then rinse the hair.

Blondes can help to keep their fair shade by having an occasional lemon rinse. Squeeze the juice of a lemon into one pint of warm water and use as a (imil rinse. Do not use tills rinse too often, otherwise you will eventually have a badly-bleached bead of hair. Once every eight weeks is quite ample. Summer time is generally discolouration time for the white-haired woman. To help kill those yellow glints you can procure a specially-prepared blue rinse from your hairdresser. He will have several brands, and will recommend a reliable one for your use. This is far better than the blue bag which is usually used, but was. after all. made for your clothes. If the household blue were suitable it would bo used in salons as it is much cheaper than the niannfnetnrcd hair blue.
