SYDNEY CUP

Wotan Joint Favourite For Big Event NOTES AND COMMENTS Death of Marqueteur’s Owner (By The Watcher.) Wotan is a first-line favourite with Silver Standard for the Sydney Cup, to be run on Easter Monday. Returned to Owner. The Ricearton trainer C. Davey, who has had charge of Brigadore for several months, returned him to his owner at Trenthani last week, and the I’olazel gelding is back at Marton again. Not the First.

Tn referring to Wild Chase’s St. Lager win it was stated in this column that Wild Chase was the first Paper Money to win beyond a mile apd a half, but a correspondent, “Groper,” queries whether Paper Money did not sire a Perth Cup winner over two miles. Reference to the records discloses that he did, Bonny Note, by Paper Money, and bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan, winning that event in 1931. Marqueteur’s Owner Dead.

The death of Mr. F. E. Besley, Whenuakura, removes from the ranks of honorary officials at the Waverley Racing Club’s meeting one of the best known and most popular figures. For many years Mr. Besley filled the position of honorary timekeeper to the club. Mr. Besley was a keen lover of horses, and perhaps the performer best known in his colours was the King Mark horse Marqueteur, trained by O. Cox, which commenced racing in the late war years, winning among many events the Feilding Cup (1922), Awapuni Gold Cup (1922), Egmont Cup (1921) and 1922), C..T.G. Metropolitan Handicap (1922), and Waverley Cup (1922).

Expected at Ricearton. Silver Ring has returned home to Greymouth from Trenthani, but is expected to be at Ricearton for the Easter racing.

Owned on West Coast. The nomination and acceptance of Supreme Court for the Westport meeting has led some southerners to the opinion that he is a North Island “cast-off,” but his owner is a well-known West Coast doctor, who probably wishes his horse to carry his colours at the local meetings, especially in the absence of J. Fryer >n Australia.

Riding at Westport. The Trentham lightweight, J. McCauley, has goue to the West Coast, and will do the riding for M.Conza’s stable at the forthcoming meetings.

New Jumping Rider. The Australian jockey A. Russell, who is attached to F. D. Jones’s stable, has been schooling Palmary at Washdyke, and will ride him in the brush hurdle races at Ricearton.

Southern Pair. Travenna has been allowed to drop out of the two principal handicaps at the C.J.C. Easter meeting, but he has been entered for minor events, and as Gold Boa remains in the Great. Easter Handicap it appears likely that the pair will race at Ricearton.

Not Good Enough. Peacock has something of a reputation in the south, but he has now failed twice on successive visits to Trentham.

Riding Engagements. W. Broughton will ride Lapel in the Pahiatua Cup. He will be at Auckland at Easter and will ride the horses in the stable of F. Davis.

Race Timetables. Starting times for Pahiatua on Friday are: 12. u, 12.-15, 1.25, 2.19, 2,50, 3.30, 4.10 and 4.55.

Starting times at Westport on Saturday will be: 12.15. 1.0, 1.40, 2.20, 3.0, 3.40, 4.20, and 5.0. Starting times for the Stratford meeting on Saturday are; 12.0, 12.-15, 1.30, 2.15, 3.0, 3.45, 4.30 and 5.15.1

Queen Nona Destroyed. The King Lu marc Queen Nona, who received a fractured fetlock some months ago, bud been successfully treated by Mr. R. Burke, Waihou, but she was kicked by a horse recently, and her leg )>£pkeu below the forearm, so that she bad to be destroyed. Jockey-trainer Suspended.

Last Link won the Queeusbury Handicap at Cromwell on Friday, but following an inquiry the stewards awarded the race to Silver Sail. An outcome of the affair was the suspension of J. Dooley, rider of Last Link, for two months, on a charge of boring. This will necessitate other arrangements being made for the team trained by Dooley, several of which (McHeath, Sea Fox, Red Lance, Vallock and Pink Robe) are engaged at Easter meetings.

New Saddle Cloths. The Canterbury Jockey Club will use in future black saddle cloths with white numbers, similar to those now used at Ellerslie and Trentham. Patience Rewarded.

Chief Ranger was not produced until a late three-year-old, and his second race was not until about 12 h)oq£Jis lattr. Such unusual patience has had its reward this year, and he has proved good. Lacan, a four-year-old half-brother to Chief Ranger, had his initial race at Bulls early in the month. Lacan is racgjl by his' breeder, Mr. T. J. Evans, but the older horse carries the colours of Mr. A. Young, Answer to Correspondent. “Curious,” Wanganui.—£6/5/-. Fixtures. March 19, 20—Pahiafua R.C. March 20—. Stratford R.C.
