FREEZING STRIKE

Companies’ Request To Police STATEMENTS AT AUCKLAND By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 17. Immediately they had knowledge that the men were going to stay in the works the Auckland freezing companies made application to the superintendent of police, Superintendent. Till, for the eviction of the men. stated a representative of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Ltd., when the Minister’s statement that no demand was made was referred to him. No time was wasted in making the request because it was considered that the men were committing a breach of the law by staying illegally on the premises after being paid off. The application was not complied with, however, because Superintendent Till said be had received instructions from Wellington not to take any action. This statement was confirmed by a representative of W. and R. Fletcher. Ltd. He said that the sergeant of police at Otahuhu was asked first, but the request was sent on to Superintendent Till at the sergeant’s request. A demand for the clearance of the works was made in concert by the companies and it was also made before the Minister arrived.

The Minister’s statement appears on page 8.
