Heavy Trading Last Week INDUSTRIALS FIRM Business in the stock and share markets last week was very brisk, and a heavy turnover was recorded. Trading in Government loans was of substantial volume, over £42,000 worth of stock and bonds being dealt with at Wellington alone. In the share sections industrial and trading issues were actively traded, particularly chain stores and breweries. Banks and financials were also well supported. The markets were generally firm. Prices of Government loans showed little movement, despite the heavy volume of business. Little interest was shown in local body and company debentures. Banks were fairly active, -New Zealands. Commercial of Australia, and b. S. and A.’s accounting for the bulk ot the business. New Zcalands showed little change, sales ranging from 40/d to 40/9. Commercial of Australia sold to 19/10, but eased later to 19/5, ex dividend. E., S. and A. Banks sold at from £6/6/- to £6/3/6. New South Wales went at £35/12/6, National of New. Zealand at 63/-, National of Australasia at £7/12/9 to £7/13/-. and Unions at £lO 12/6 to £lO/11/-. . t , . . Insurance issues were quiet and barely steady. South British Insurance were firm at 95/6. Little change was seen in pastoral and financial shares. Gas and coal-mining shares were dull and business was restricted. Good support was given to brewery shares, which were a strong market. A feature of this section was the sharp rise in Dominions, which reached a new high level of 44/6, as against 19/- a year ago. The rise is believed to foreshadow a further issue of capital. New'Zealands were firmly traded at 57/3 and Staples were done at 40/-. • Tooths advanced from 56/9 to 57/3, _ and Tooheys moved up to business at 35/6. New Zealand Refrigerating, fully paid, firmed to 20/6, but the 10/- paid eased from 9/6 to 9/2. Canterbury Frozen Meats sold at from £9/1/6 to £9/2/6, and Gears at 17/-. A moderate business was done in woollen issues at steady rates. Business in timber shares was confined tp Kauris, which sold at from 23/- to 23/6. . , . , The outstanding feature in chain stores was a substantial rise in G.. J. Coles, which were actively traded and moved up from 97/3 to £5/1/6, later business being done at the easier..rates of 99/J to 99/6.' The Woolworths'issues were generally firm. Selfridges (N.Z.), . 4/paid, sold at from 8/9 to 7/-. : Selfridges (A/asia)' sold at 42/6 (old issue) and 42/- to 40/9 (new issue). Macduffs preference were done at 22/-, and Shillings at 18/11 to 19/1; . Good business was done.in Australian industrials, notably Broken Hill Proprietary. and Electrolytic Zincs. B.H.P. s were very active, the fully paid selling at from 80/9 to 81/6, and the contributing at from 66/- to 68/6. Electrolytic Zinc preference firmed from 55/2 to. 56/9, and the ordinaries from 54/6 to 55/1. Dun-lop-Perdriaus, Hume Pipe-and Mort s Dock, were also' well supported. In fhe :mining' .section Mount Lyells were a_ctiyely traded at from 41/7 to 43/-. Mount Morgans were, a shade easier on the week.
