THE WOOL MARKET

First Invercargill Sale RECORD PRICE SET FOR CRUTCHINGS Pronounced Bradford Activity By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, February 5. Values fully up to those realised at northern centres were obtained at the first Invercargill wool sale, which was concluded this evening. There was a full bench of buyers and competition was keen throughout the sale, and was sometimes animated. It was estimated that the return would average easily 16d. a pound, and between £2l and £22 a bale. The average price a pound last February was 8.76 d., and the price a bale about £ll 10/-. Top price for the sale was secured by Andrews and Darricott, of Eyre Creek, on whose account six bales of fine Corriedale ewe wool was sold at 25Jd. A New Zealand record price was set for crutchings, a bin of super line bringing 19Jd. It should be explained that crutchings are not part of the woollen trade; they are bought for the carpet business. Bradford took a high percentage of the offering, specialising in crossbreds and half bred?, and Japan was in the market to some extent, but it was difficult to assess the quantity lifted. Some lines of long, strong and sound hoggets realised about 20d„ and some round about 21d. Bellies and pieces were bought eagerly, and locks were in keen demand. Complimentary reference to the Southland clip was made by buyers. Following is the range of prices, those for the first sale last year also being given :— 1937. 193fi.
