WAR ON NOISE
London Tube Railways t (British Official Wireless. I (Received February 5, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, February 4. Noise in London tube railways is to be reduced by half at an estimated cost of £lOO,OOO. Experiments for the reduction of the wheel-on-rail noise are now reported to be complete and all rail sections on 440 track miles of the system and on all planned extensions are to be welded by special process. A final solution of the second half of the noise problem—that of absorbing as much as possible of the noise that is produced—has not yet been reached. Experiments have been made in a section of tube with asbestos composition mattresses raised to the height of the floor of the train along the tunnel walls. For a number of reasons, however, they have been found unsatisfactory and experiments with other materials are to continue.
