Bird News

1 went to the creek to see a kingfisher’s nest which I found last week. It is in a hole in a willow tree. It is small where they go in, but it widens out into a bigger round hole. The baby birds are quaint little fellows. They have a long beak and funny little feet. They have no feathers yet. When I put a little twig in beside them they grabbed hold of it and would not leave go. There are three birds. I saw their mother go in to the tree with a wee fish in her mouth.— Ralph the Rover (12), Kumeroa.

“Taniwha” ami 1 went down on the beaeh yesterday and we saw a little seagull with a broken wing. I picked it up and took it home, and bathed its wing and made a bed for it, as well as giving it food andwater. It died at 6 o’clock that night.— Seashell (13), Parapara umu. The other day when I went outside I heard a bird chirping. Going to investigate I saw a young cuckoo in a tree. After a while, two wax eyes came along with something in their beaks. They took turns in feeding the cuckoo. Last night I went outside and there was a little hedgehog.— Black Eagle (14), Kumeroa.
