“ART IN NEW ZEALAND”
“Art in New Zealand,” published by Harry H. Tombs, Wellington.
The December number of this attractive quarterly for art-lovers fully maintains the standard set by its predecessors, with its coloured plates and other pictures again beautifully reproduced.' Notice is first of all taken of the fact that this issue marks the end of the year that has seen the completion of the National Art Gallery at Wellington and the significance of this in the life of the city and the country as a whole is stressed. Attention is then turned to the exhibition of Australian art at the National Gflllery and the choice of pictures from this exhibition for reproduction has been fortuitous since the four include one by Elioth Gruner, the New Zealand-born, artist who a few days ago was awarded the Wynne Prize aud one by Arthur Streeton, who was knighted in this week’s Honours List. Mr. Roland Hipkins writes a critical survey of the pictures in the Australian collection. The publication also includes reproductions of pictures recently presented to the National Gallery; the winning play, by Una Craig, in “Art in New Zealand’s” one-act play competition; an article by George Osborne on Iwo artists iu diflerent spheres, Petrus van der Yelden and Herbert-Bloy, the musician; a short story by Isobel Andrews; poems by Robin Hyde and J. R. Hervey, aud other features.
