Captain William Hobson
In the year 1837, the year of Queen Victoria’s accession to the Throne, the J natives of New Zealand were in a ' state of unrest owing to the wars carried on bv Hongi Hika, Te Rauparaha ' and other chiefs. The Governor of a New South Wales directed Captain t William Hobson, commander of 1 H.M.S. Rattlesnake, on the East In- < dies Station, to proceed to Kororareka ■' to report on the state of affairs in the colony. He arrived at the Bay of Islands on May 28, 1837, and remained ‘ there for several weeks. In bis report he stated that the quarrels among . the Maoris appeared to be settled chiefly by the influence of the missionaries, of whose work among the natives he spoke in the highest terms. —H.D.
