STATE HIGHWAYS
Criticism by County Chairman “AN ADDITIONAL BURDEN” Dominion Special Service. Masterton. December 8. •T have thought for a long time that rhe taking over of certain highways by the Main Highways Board would entail an additional burden on local bodies, and thirt ie borne out in the statement made bv the deputy-chairman of the Highways’ Board in the South Island the other day, in which he said that works might have to bn curtailed by local bodies in order to provide money for State highways.” said the chairman of the Masterton County Council, Mr. W. I. Armstrong, to-day. "I think it is a wrong principle altogether,” the chairman continued. "The Minister of Public Works has told us we were going to have more money, but works we are doing are going to be curtailed. I think that is wrong.” Cr. P. R. Welch said it was not a fair proposition to counties that had got -their work done. “These State highways run through ridings in the counties, and the ridings are going to be relieved of a certain amount of expenditure.’' said the chairman.
The county clerk, Mr. J. C. D. Mackley, said he had learned that the board would be in complete control of the highways as from January 1, 1937.
