CHILDREN’S PARTY

After-care Association All the festivity and excitement of Christmas was evident iu the Oddfellows’ Hall yesterday afternoon, when a happy crowd of children reaped the full enjoyment of the Christmas party given by the president and executive of the Wellington After-Care Association. The association has made this party an annual affair for the children of the club and their mothers, and the occasion is always eagerly looked forward to. This year it was decided to hold the party in a larger hall than usual, and so much more space was available for playing games and the setting out of a real “party tea." Two long tables down each side of the room were most effectively decorated. One had vases of pink and mauve flowers, with paper serviettes and bon-bons to match at each plate, and the other had a bright orange colour scheme. A Christmas tree, heavily laden with intriguing looking parcels and gay with balloons, occupied an important corner, and during the afternoon the parcels were distributed, every mother and child receiving one.

There was quite a large number of visitors present also, who showed keen interest in the display of needlework done by the children. This little exhibition was most creditable, all the work being beautifully sewn and of a useful variety. There were cushion covers, work bags, pot holders and so on, embroidered in brightly-coloured wools or silks. One very well-worked piece of tapestry for a stool cover, was much admired, having been done by one of the boys. Each article had a greeting card, with the name of the child who had made it, attached. Several choruses sung by the children diversified the games, and a solo was sung by Miss Morton. Mrs. E. J. Moore, J.P., president of the association, acted as hostess for the afternoon, and she was presented with a posy of pink roses from the committee by Mary Widdop. All the arrangements were in the hands of the committee, who wish to express their gratitude to the Crippled Children Society, the Rotary Club and all those who gave donations or helped in any

way. The vice-presidents, most of whom were present during the afternoon, are: Mrs. Coutts, Mrs. F. E. Ward, Mrs. Bird, Mrs. Emerson, Mrs. Henderson, and the Hon. P. Fraser, and the committee is comprised of Mrs. Thornley, Mrs. Jameson, Mrs. Widdop, Mrs. Outhwaite, Mrs. Strong, Mrs. J. C. Andersen, Miss Lowe, Miss Eager, Miss Emerson, Mrs. H. Chairman (secretary), and Mrs. C. Stewart (treasurer).
